Here our personal recommendations on what not to forget to eat!

Sweets / Desserts
  • Pastel de nata (egg-tart)
  • Pudim Abade de Priscos (egg pudding, mainly to be found in Braga/Guimarães)
  • "Croissant" (brioche-like croissant, local speciality, super good when asked with butter or ham or cheese, or even better all of them, and then toasted!!)
  • Ovos moles de Aveiro (speciality with raw eggs and sugar)
  • Pão de ló de Ovar (sponge cake with raw eggs in the middle)
  • Molotof (based on the egg-whites)
  • Bolo de bolacha (Marie biscuit based, with cream and coffee)
  • Nata Brasileira (egg-tart like, a cake that Bastien likes, Ana is extremely against this recommendation!)

Savoury - meals
  • Fish:
    • Bacalhau (codfish, any recipe is delicious !), Ana's favourites:
      • Bacalhau com natas (with cream)
      • Bacalhau grelhado (grilled) / no forno (oven)
      • Bacalhau à Brás (with chips and egg)
      • etc. etc. ...
    • Polvo panado (breaded octopus)
    • Salada de polvo (octopus salad)
    • Sardinhas (Sardines)
  • Meat:
    • Carne assada (meat in the oven e.g. Lombo assado)
    • Francesinha (meat sandwich covered in cheese and sauce, served with fries... we dare you to eat one until the end! ;) We recommend the restaurant "Taberna Belga" in Braga and "Capa negra II" in Porto)
    • Tripas à moda do Porto (pork, tripes and blood sausage, all deep fried)
    • Alheira (poultry sausage)
    • Papas de sarrabulho (bread and meat in a blood soup)
    • Carne de porco à Alentejana (pork meat with clams)
    • Frango de churrasco (bbq chicken)
    • Leitão (suckling pig)
  • Arroz (rice)
    • Arroz de polvo (octopus)
    • Arroz de marisco (seafood)
    • Arroz de feijão (beans, served with e.g. sardines)
    • Arroz de Sangue = Pica no chão (chicken blood)
    • Arroz de Pato (duck)
Savoury - snacks
  • Bacalhau (codfish):
    • Pataniscas (with egg - fried)
    • Bolinhos de bacalhau (with mashed potatoes and fried)
  • Bifana (marinated pork sandwich - we recommend the bar "Icarai" in Porto)
  • Moelas (marinated gizzards)
  • Empadas (savory "cakes": pork, beef, chicken, mushrooms...)
  • Bola de carne (brioche bread with chorizo, ham and cheese) 
  • Tosta mista (ham and cheese toast)
