Breakfast instructions

In Portugal, breakfast ought to be taken at PADARIAS!
Padarias are local bakeries which produce their own bread and pastries.

There is a lot to be said about those places, so we thought they deserved a separate post.
To experience the TRUE Portuguese breakfast, follow the instructions hereunder.

Click here for a map of the recommendations.

INSTRUCTIONS:

1. Select the place

If you know where to go (avoid touristic places, especially in Porto), a full breakfast should cost between 2-4 euros per person.
A good Padaria does not look fancy. It should be full of people, noisy, and have a large display full of cakes and pastries.

See recommendations in the map linked above.

2. Order

You can order something sweet and/or savoury, together with a coffee (and/or a juice, a tea).

Sweet:
There are many pastries available, usually in a large display: Pastel de nata, Pastel de chila (pumpkin pastry), Nata Brasileira, Tíbia, Queque de cenoura (carrot cake), Bolo de arroz (rice cake)... You can just try a different one every single day!

Savoury:
As for savoury, try a Torrada (2 toasted bread slices with salted butter) or a Croissant (brioche) with ham, cheese or butter (or all! and ask for it heated !).

Drink:
Freshly pressed orange juice is often available, but we also recommend Compal, a brand of fruit juices (try in particular pear, peach and apricot).

There are mainly 4 types of coffee orders:
  • Café (= expresso)
  • Café pingado or Pingo (expresso with a drop of milk)
  • Meia de leite (1 expresso : 1 milk)
  • Galão (1 expresso : 2 milk)

 DO NOT, ever ever:
- ask for soy milk :)
- order a "cappuccino", or a "latte", or anything Italian
- ask for an "americano"...

PRO TIPS:
- you can ask "meia torrada" (half torrada) to have only one slice
- you can ask any of the breads on display "torrado" (toasted, with butter, or uppon request with ham and/or cheese)

3. Sit down
and wait for your order. BOM APETITE!
